“In 2017, Douglas County rescue missions almost doubled, from 61 missions in 2016 to 104 last year.
Brian Melvin, Douglas County Search and Rescue’s coordinator, said the increases can be attributed to two things: an ever-increasing elderly population and young people that are too reliant on their phones.”
–Douglas County Search & Rescue Missions on the Rise Due to Faulty GPS, Elderly, March 25,12018 in Roseburg News Review
If you spend any time in the outdoors, you need to know how to find your way! Don’t become a statistic! This class will teach you how to use a map and compass to navigate in the wilderness. This is a 2 part class with a classroom day, and a field day- where you will apply the skills in the woods with realistic scenarios!
This is a class geared for kids where they will learn basic skills and then practice them on an orienteering course.
Compasses ARE PROVIDED for this class.
This class is in conjunction with the Umpqua Community College community education program. You can register by calling 541-440-7744 or online at umpuqa.edu/cwt
